MARCH PRESENTATION

Soil Conductivity Profiling for Site Characterization

Tony Tingle
IT Corporation, Knoxville TN

Abstract

Soil conductivity was used to map the subsurface geology at two sites. Two objectives were met during the study. The first was to determine the thickness and distribution of fill material at Site 1 and the second site was to determine the thickness and distribution of gravel deposits at Site 2. A soil conductivity tool pushed by a Geoprobe rig proved to be fast, effective, and generated no soil cuttings. Overall, the use of soil conductivity profiling was successful for providing data to aid in interpretation of the subsurface geology at the sites.

FEBRUARY MEETING SUMMARY

by Tony Tingle

The February meeting of the ETGS and the The East Tennessee Chapter of AIPG was conducted in Knoxville at Ryan's Family Steakhouse. Scott Logan and Greg Swanson presented their work with a small 3-well groundwater extraction system, that after only 10 weeks of operation showed a marked decrease in efficiency. Severe iron and microbiologic fouling were the causes. Various mechanical adjustments were made with no noticeable effects. Finally, a unique well redevelopment and discharge line cleanout program (liquid and solid carbon dioxide) was implemented. This was followed by retrofitting a chemical injection metering system in two of the three extraction wells. The system has been operational for the last six months, and pumping rates have remained at or near their design rates.
