Karst and Caves Along the Proposed SR 475 Study Corridor

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has proposed a corridor for a bypass to the north and west of Knoxville referred to as SR 475, Knoxville Parkway. As part of the EIS study of the proposed corridor, a geologic/geohazards study was conducted by the TDOT Geotechnical Engineering Section. A result of this study was the identification of karst areas, caves, and sinkholes along the study route. A number of the caves that were found were surveyed to better locate the features vertically and horizontally with respect to the corridor. A number of the caves were mapped. The study corridor was shifted in places to avoid, where possible, the cave and sinkhole issues.
